Chris Harvey :
Review: Short, Radical & FUN Pocket Rocket!
Despite it’s ridiculously short length the RR's performs incredibly well…
Take-Off: With plenty of nose rocker you can get away with some pretty insane take-offs. My first take-off I was up and planning fast and felt like I was ‘floating’ along the wave.
Riding: The volume in the rails and wide hull helps it to sit high in the water and carry speed through the turns. It’s a ‘pocket rocket’ so you need a pretty steep wave to really get the boat performing, but once you get going it feels incredible…it’s surprisingly fast and I was making sections that I didn’t think possible in such a short boat. On the wave the boat really stable and forgiving so you can trim the boat easily and glide around the wave, as well as making really aggressive, slashy turns. On a powerful wave this boat will fly out of bottom turns and off the lip…this is a BIG AIR boat!
Paddle-Out: The only downside to this is the paddle-out. With such a short boat and very little flat water speed, it’s easy to take a few beatings…but good for upper body training! It’s also pretty unstable on flat but as soon as you get up and riding it’s really stable and forgiving.
Summary:
The RR's combines the short playfulness of a freestyle kayak with the speed and carving ability of surf kayak in a way that I haven’t seen achieved before. Although essentially a surf boat, it’s short length makes it nice and playful. If you have a good roll and don’t mind paddling hard to get out back, you’ll love the performance of this and all levels of surfers will have fun
Shortie has real board-like performance.
I read Chris Harvey's review on the Mega pages with some angst; I didn't want a boat that was going to prove challenging to paddle out as I am a leisure paddler who doesn't get the high levels of fittness that were implied to be requisite. However I did know that I wanted a shorter boat and so I ordered one anyway. I have yet to be dissapointed with this boat in ANY situation.
Paddling out: I have yet to be creamed on a paddle-out in this boat. There is no doubt that it is slower than others in a straight paddle, but it still has an awesome ability to hop over the foam piles, and I have done this on solid double-overhead (stand-up) days. You do need to have a good sense of timing though!!! You also need to be wary when hanging out in the line-up because you have to be a little deeper to compensate for the lack of paddle speed, though the boat takes late drops to the point of air-dropping (which is awesome fun!!!), and this can lead to getting slammed on the sneaker sets!
On the wave: There really is not a lot to say other than the fact that this boat will blow you away!!! I used to surf stand-up until my accident, and this boat puts me back there on a par with most of the board-surfers I meet. Everyone I know who has one of these boats, or who has paddled one, is just so stoked with the performance. It is lightning quick when you pump it through the turns, and it comes off the tail like no other boat. You WILL get air, and will pull off many other moves that you probably thought were just for guys like Dave-the-wave and Darren etc.
