REVIEW

When coaching people to kayak people often ask what's the most important thing relative to kayaking in the surf, and the answer is always the same, FUN. If you're enjoying your boating the rest of the skills look after themselves, and it's been often quoted that the best surfer in the water is the one who's having the most fun. And that is exactly what the latest boat from Mega is. There is no other way of describing it, everybody who has had the opportunity to paddle it has said “that was so much fun”, “That boat is such a laugh” and “I haven't smiled like that in a kayak for years”. So why is it so much fun?

When I first saw it I was sceptical as to its performance possibilities. I thought: “It's ridiculously short; coming in at about 6'8 inches so therefore is going to be a nightmare to paddle out and charge down the line. It's pretty wide so won't transition from rail to rail easily, and has got a massive cockpit so will drag on all the bottom turns”. Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. First paddle out was exactly as I expected short boat equals slow boat, so slow in fact that a 12 year old overtook me in his boat (I've since insisted on him paddling with a helmet dragging on the back on the guise that it's “developmental”).

Take off on the first wave was earlier than I expected due to the width and after that it wasn't like anything I've surfed before. Fast really fast almost falling down the wave, then does a super tight carving turn with no effort at all, point it down the line and it's twitching from left to right waiting for you to do something with it, while it's twitching it's developing speed ready for the next move, point it straight down the wave and bounce into a blunt and then reverse into a back stab. Wave one done and things are looking good. This is a surf kayak that feels like a freestyle boat to sit in and at the flick of technique from the paddler will behave like one, then with another flick goes back to surfing like a surf boat.

Fundamentally clever design has allowed this, the width has been compensated for by the aggressive vee in the tail, and the flare on the knee bumps is combined with the width, so that you rarely catch the cockpit on any turns. For those of you reading this that surf boards it's the kayak equivalent of a fish, short, fast and loads of fun. As yet it has no name “fat fish” would describe it's plan shape “personality disorder” would highlight the fact that it can swap between two different boating styles, but probably most appropriate would be “smiler” because that's what it'll make you do

COMPETITION TIME

SEPTEMBER 2008

We have just returned from a great week in France for the Home internationals and World cup finals.

What a great week for the Mega Flying Squad paddlers and the England Team.

By the end of day one in the Homes ,England had a commanding lead with the guys and girls taking wins in the 1 st six heats of the day and ending with the score of 22 points for the day.

Day 2 continued the form of the previous day ,but was cut short by a lack of surf coming into the last of the mens heats. By this stage though England were in an unassailable lead and only requiring the guys to turn up for the remaining heats to ensure victory.

Attention now turned to the World cup with some outstanding performances from the Flying Squad paddlers.

Juniors Sam Davenport and David Speller ,making it through to finals with Edu and Chris Harvey in the senior event.

For the ladies Tamsin was up against Ailsa MacDougall in the final.

A distinct lack of surf meant wed, thur and fri were non contest days but with great weather and a forcast of a swell for Sat the finals looked set to be exciting to say the least.

In almost perfect 3-4' conditions Sam and David went head to head in the Juniors with Sam taking top honours.

The Mens final saw Edu against David in his 2 nd final ,Edu taking a great win with Sam and Chris Harvey in equal 3 rd ,

The Ladies event had Tamsin taking top honours,

The net result being a clean sweep of all 3 classes by Mega Flying Squad members.

The culmination of a fantastic week.

Thanks to all involved, especially Pete, Stuey and Rusty for putting it all on and Congratulations to John Watson on his 1 st England Team Win.

Joel King
Joel King
AN EXTREME sportsman has become a world record holder with a breathtaking display of speed.

Street luge expert Joel King smashed a long-standing high-speed record at the former Bentwaters air base, near Woodbridge.

He used a board powered by a jet engine to reach a speed of 110mph, which comfortably beat the previous record of 98.5mph.

Lying flat on the powered board, Mr King, 27, of Bognor Regis was just a few inches off the ground throughout the bid.

He said afterwards: “It was absolutely amazing and the sensation of speed was awesome. I was buffeted by the wind, the tarmac was flying past and there was grit in the visor.

“It was nerve wracking. I was completely pushing the boundaries and I have been so focused on this for the last few months.”

Street luge was born in southern California in the 1970s when downhill skateboards found they could reach faster speeds by lying down on their skateboard. Street luge competitions normally involve racers competing on boards which are powered by gravity alone, with no brakes. But, for this record-breaking attempt, Mr King's MEGA board featured a miniature jet engine.

10th July
I would like to say a big thank you to all the customers and friends of Mega that came to our aid recently.

In mid June it was brought to our attention that a supposedly brand new bare Maverick shell was being offered for auction on Ebay.
As to the best of our and our molders knowledge no empty shells had been sold ,we started an immediate investigation as to where this shell had originated from.
The pictures on Ebay suggested that not only was this an empty shell but that it had not ever been assembled as there were no signs of holes, that would have been drilled as a result of the assembly process. It was not simply a case of someone dismantling a previously complete Maverick and selling of the bits.
It soon became apparent that this was either a copy ( a very unlikely scenario) or it had to have come from either ourselves or our molders. Given the nature of the business’s that we are both in it was felt that our factory security and the likelihood of it having been removed from either one without our knowledge was also remote.
Of far more concern however was the possibility that should this have fallen into the hands of someone without the necessary skills and knowledge to assemble the kayak to a safe and usable condition, or heaven forbid, used it as it was with no built in flotation or associated safety devices , someone could have put themselves at serious risk.
It was decided therefore that it was imperative in the 1st instance to ensure that we “Mega” should win the auction to remove this shell from the market whilst the investigation to determine where it had originated from continued.
The fact that we strongly suspected this shell was infact somehow stolen from either ourselves or our moulders meant that Mega enlisted the help of several associates to ask some pertinent questions of the seller whilst ensuring that the seller was not alerted to our suspicions.
During the course of the auction Mega had received several enquiries as to how they may purchase a “Bare Shell” and or the component parts to complete an assembly. Our apologies go to those who perhaps received rather vague answers, but I am sure that you can understand why that was necessary.
Just to set the record straight, Mega never has or have any intention of selling bare plastic kayak shells due to the potential, as mentioned above, of ending up with unsafe products.
At the end of the auction once the seller’s details were fully available these were passed to the appropriate authorities for further investigation. The shell in question has now been recovered and we can confirm that although described as “New” it was most certainly not in a safe condition for its intended purpose. We would also apologies to the other bidders in the auction who were hoping for a bargain buy.
The investigation into how all this happened is continuing with all the parties involved and once all the details are confirmed we will, if it is felt necessary, make those details available.
What we can say with a degree of certainty is that this was a one off situation. Measures that we have since put in place will ensure that there can be no repeat of it happening.
As a responsible manufacturer we wish to maintain the highest standards of product and ensure that our dealers and customers receive a product that will give them many years of safe enjoyment.

The prize draw for our New IC Boat has been made !

3rd April
Our new IC boat

The launch of any new boat is always a big event for us but a new International Class boat is a bit special as its very much back to our roots.
Its how Mega came into being with the 1st Jester back in 1991.
Since that time "Jesters" have figured in the vast majority of medal placings at all World Championship events.

It is over 6 years since the last Jester, the "Jester Trident" was launched during which time it has gained a great following with Darren Bason taking the World title in Costa Rica in 2005. This new model has a lot to live up to but we think that the new IC boat, which has had input from the worlds top paddlers, will continue the "Jester" success.

Features that we have introduced in the HP models, adjustable seats, thigh braces etc. are incorporated in the new model allowing paddlers to set the boat up to the correct trim and comfort as well performance has been a primary aim. We think both recreational paddlers as well as the top International stars will revel in the performance.

The only issue, and most difficult to solve has been that of the "Name"

To that end we are delighted to offer the chance of "Naming the boat" and WINNING one of your own. Remember that all our IC boats are prefixed "Jester"

The competition will run from 3rd until the 16th of April with the winner being announced on the 17th.

Entries are encouraged from around the world and its FREE to enter.
Rules
1) Only one entry per person.
2) Register your entry here by posting the name and if necessary your reasoning
3) In the event of the chosen "Winning Name" receiving multiple entries the winner will be drawn from a hat.

So there you go, What have you to loose, its free to enter , get your entry in TODAY!!

Pleased so far!!

1st Feb 2007

And now for something completely different, well for us anyway.
And what a response we’ve had on this around the planet, its like, this boat, that boat, like every other playboat, all very amusing to me as their talking about boats i've never even heard of. Of course it looks something like most of them, you don’t set out to reinvent the wheel
“Moving out of our comfort Zone” someone said, well yes , but we’ve never been afraid to do that, after all we did do the boat for the Atlantic crossing.
Will it work, truthfully I don’t know yet, if it does, then great, we’ll carry on and make it, If not, well I think I’m interested enough to keep trying. It’s certainly been a fun week so doing it., and trying some different ideas on outfitting, which we can encorporate into the surf boats.
With luck we will have a couple of them on the water tomorrow and get some 1st impression.
More info as soon as we have some
Malcolm
